How common is asthma in Minnesota?

  • One in 14 children and one in 12 adults in Minnesota currently have asthma, adding up to more than 410,000 Minnesotans who have asthma.1
  • An estimated 11% of middle and high school students (grades 6-12) in Minnesota currently have asthma.2
  • In 2013, there were 19,970 emergency department visits and 3,197 hospitalizations for asthma across Minnesota.3
  • In 2013, there were 80 deaths due to asthma in Minnesota; 60% of those who died were age 65 or older when they died. There were 10 deaths among residents under age 35.4

Are there disparities in asthma rates in Minnesota?

  • Asthma prevalence in Minnesota is lower than the national average.1 However, there are significant disparities in prevalence by race/ethnicity. American Indian and African American middle/high school students are more likely than other students to have been diagnosed with asthma.5 Among adults, the prevalence of asthma is higher among African Americans than whites.1
  • Asthma hospitalization rates among children living in the Twin Cities metropolitan area are 54% higher than among children living in Greater Minnesota. Rates of asthma-related ED visits are nearly twice as high among children in the Twin Cities metro area than in Greater Minnesota. In certain ZIP codes in the city of Minneapolis, asthma hospitalization rates among children are 4 times higher than the statewide rate.3
  • There are also disparities in asthma mortality in Minnesota. From 2004-2011, age-adjusted asthma mortality rates were nearly 4 times higher among African Americans than whites (38.8 vs 10.2 per 1,000,000).6

What is the economic cost of asthma?

  • In Minnesota in 2010, asthma cost an estimated $605 million, including $544 million in direct medical expenses and $62 million in lost work days.7
