The Injury Survey: Childhood Agricultural Trauma Evaluation (CATES)
The goal of the Injury Survey is to better understand the work habits and injury events of our youth in Greater Minnesota. To accomplish this, we will: (1) determine the magnitude and scope of injuries and asthma among 9-12 grade students; (2) describe the change in work hours that occur in these young adults during their high school career; and (3) identify risk factors for injury to help plan future prevention and intervention activities.
All 41 schools recruited for Youth at Work conducted the Injury Survey. During the 2001-2002 school year, almost 14,000 students in grades 9-11 completed two surveys (fall and spring) asking about work activities, asthma, injury occurrence, and risk factors related to injuries. The same students, now in grades 10-12, were followed into the 2002-2003 school year, and they were again asked to describe their current work activities, any injury events and any occurrence of asthma. The definition of work used in this survey was any paid or unpaid employment either at or away from home, chores or work done either away from home or for family, such as lawn care, babysitting, or dishes, or seasonal work such as harvest or lifeguarding.
Preliminary data from the first year of surveys can be viewed below. Within all 41 schools, the percent of students who reported working ranged from 51% among grade 9 students during the school year to 86% of students in grade 11 during the summer. Personal services, including lawn care, babysitting and deliveries, accounted for 45% of the jobs held by the students, followed by restaurant work (16%), retail (12%), and agricultural activities (9%). On average, approximately 10% of the students reported having an injury both during the summer months and during the school year. Information from the second year of surveys will be available in Fall of 2003.
