American Indian Family Center

Project name: Wakanyeja Kin Wakan Pi (Our Children are Sacred) Program

Grant Type: Priority Health Area Implementation

Project Description: The WKWP program attempts to address the reduction of infant mortality in the American Indian community. This program is an expansion of our chemical dependency program and is designed to be a culturally-specific, comprehensive, wrap around model for American Indian women who are pregnant and/or parenting. This expansion allowed the AIFC to align the work under one program thus streamlining intake and screening processes, communication, improving outreach, recruitment and participation of all pregnant American Indian women and families so they have immediate access to specialized support while they are pregnant and/or parenting and thus reduce health disparities. This program provides culturally specific parenting classes that embrace positive Indian parenting principles and promotes healthy family dynamics.

EHDI Grant Activity Outcomes: 1. Improve the health status and safety of infants from birth to one year. 2. Provide parent education, outreach and resources to parents who are planning a pregnancy, currently pregnant or have an infant under one year. 3.
