The Minnesota BRFSS, initiated in 1984, is a large-scale telephone survey conducted on a monthly basis throughout the year. Topics covered by the BRFSS include smoking, overweight, physical activity, fruit/vegetable consumption, chronic disease prevalence, and access to healthcare.

The BRFSS survey is supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is conducted in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories (Guam, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands). MDH provides data to CDC monthly.
