Birth Resulting in Stillbirth

Minnesota Statutes 2005, section 144.2151, allows for the filing of a record of birth, resulting in stillbirth, if a fetal death report has been filed according to Minnesota Statutes, section 144.222. Section 144.2151, subdivision 2, requires the hospital to "advise the parent or parents of a stillbirth:

(1)  that they may request preparation of a record of birth resulting in stillbirth;

(2)  that preparation of the record is optional; and

(3)  how to obtain a certified copy of the record if one is requested and prepared."

To assist you in this responsibility and to provide information to parents, information about requesting a record or a certificate of birth resulting in stillbirth is posted on the Office of Vital Records web pages at:

Please refer parents to the web page or print the information on the web page for the parent.
