Thank You!

A big “Thanks” goes out to the more than 150 hospital birth registrars and midwives who participated in the 5th Annual Excellence in Birth Registration Training & Conference on May 3, 2012 in St. Paul.

In addition to the presentation of the awards listed below, we heard how birth data impacts the lives of Minnesota residents and discussed best practice tips for collecting and importing this very vital information.

Posted below are links to some of the presentations and other handouts from the conference, as well as a review of some of the questions.

2011 Excellence in Birth Registration Award Winners
Last year was a very big year in Minnesota birth registration. Not only did MDH launch an all-new computer system for birth registration, Minnesota hospitals with birthing facilities responded with their own advancements. In fact, an unprecedented 48 hospitals achieved the Excellence in Birth Registration Award for data quality and timeliness.

In order to qualify for the Excellence in Birth Registration award, hospitals must file at least 96% of all birth records within 5 days and meet the following data quality standards for selected data items. Due to the release of the new system and the learning curve associated with that change, award results were tabulated only on July through December birth records in 2011. The percentages listed below are the maximum allowable number of “unknown” responses to each data field:

Mother’s education

1.32%

WIC usage

10 %

Breastfed at hospital

5 %

Method of delivery

1 %

Date of last menstrual period

5 %
