Birth Defects Work Group
The purpose for the work group is to advise MDH on the planning, implementation, evaluation and review of the Birth Defects Information system.

MDH Goals for the Birth Defects Program
- Monitor the occurrence of birth defects in Minnesota and describe the risks of having a birth defect (get high quality data).
- Inform health professionals and educate citizens regarding birth defects in Minnesota (emphasize primary prevention).
- Provide information for service and resource planning (link to services).
Birth Defects Work Group Tasks
- Advise on the priorities for birth defects data collection (for example, which birth defects to collect data on)
- Provide advice on case definitions, starting with NTDs and oro-facial clefts.
- Review of forms for abstracting (several templates provided in meeting packet)
- Review of cases as needed
- Provide advice on case ascertainment
- Provide advice on services and prevention activities
- Advise on data interpretation
- Advise on policy and procedures for implementation and evaluation
- Advise and participate in data dissemination and linkage to services
- Other tasks as developed with the consensus of the group
