Perfluorochemicals: Water Analysis and Treatment - EH: Minnesota Department of Health

Perfluorochemicals (PFCs) and Home Treatment

Also referred to as Perfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS)

For information on point-of-use water treatment, carbon filters, and water testing for perfluorochemicals in Dakota and Washington Counties, please see the information below.

Point-of-Use Water Treatment

The evaluation below was finalized by MPCA, MDH and West Central Environmental Consulting in September 2016. This evaluation provides information about an inexpensive, easily installed, point -of-use carbon filter option for filtering drinking water at a sink faucet.

Evaluation of Perfluorochemical Removal by a Small, In-home Filter (PDF), January 2017

The activated carbon and reverse osmosis treatment technologies described in the following reports are expected to perform as described. At this point, Minnesota Department of Health has not evaluated other technologies for PFC removal. You should contact a water treatment specialist to make sure the filter model you choose meets your needs.
