Workshop: Public Health Response to Perfluorochemical Contamination in Minnesota
May 30, 2007

A dialog among policy makers, risk managers, and scientists representing communities, state government, and federal agencies concerning current responses to the emerging issue of perfluorochemical (PFC) contamination in Minnesota.

This workshop, requested by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), provided useful information to the Environmental Health Division concerning the status of perfluorochemical health assessments and health standards development. The message from federal agencies to MDH was that the health risk assessments by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) are in progress. Completion of these assessments may depend on the conduct and/or completion of additional animal toxicity studies.

Public health officials from ATSDR told the audience that the MDH approach is consistent with recognized methods and supported by the current science. The federal agencies did not suggest improvements or changes to MDH assessments and standards. The department came away from the workshop with the understanding that better values were not available for the state to use in risk management.
