Background

State and Federal laws require drain covers for public pools. Some drain covers currently in use have been recalled.

Recall of Certain Drain Covers

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a voluntary recall notice for certain drain covers on May 26, 2011. These drain covers were incorrectly rated to handle the flow of water through the cover, which could pose a possible entrapment hazard to swimmers and bathers.

CPSC is not ordering public pools with this faulty equipment to close. The Commission is recommending that such pools close until the equipment has been replaced or retrofitted. Pools and Spas that May Be Subject to the Recall

  • Wading (kiddie) pools and in ground spas regardless of the number of drains or additional anti-entrapment devices or systems
  • Single drain pools with a Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS), Vent System or Automatic Shut Off Switch

Exception to Recall

Retrofit or replacement of installed covers is not required in pools with multiple drain systems or gravity drainage systems or for covers installed before December 19, 2008. This exemption does not apply to kiddie pools, wading pools and in-ground spas.
