Health-Based Guidance for Air: Formaldehyde: Minnesota Department of Health

Guidance for Air

The following guidance was developed by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) at the request of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). For more information, contact the Health Risk Assessment Unit.

Note: This information pertains to the chronic risk assessment advice for formaldehyde only. MDH also has developed an acute HRV for this chemical.

Formaldehyde: Chronic Risk Assessment Advice
June 20, 2006

Chemical: Formaldehyde
CAS number: 50-00-0
Endpoint(s): Cancer
Chronic Value: 2 ug/m3*
Source: MDH

*Note this value replaces the MDH Health Risk Value (HRV) as the most current MDH guidance for this chemical.

MDH conducted a thorough literature review for formaldehyde and determined that the available information was sufficient to develop chronic Risk Assessment Advice (RAA) for statewide use. In this case, the RAA supercedes the MDH chronic Health Risk Value (HRVs) for formaldehyde. Generally, RAA may contain greater uncertainty than HRVs and Health-Based Values because the available information is more limited.
