Contaminants of Emerging Concern
Program Objectives

The CEC program delivers useful information on contaminants of emerging concern to interested individuals and groups, both inside and outside of state government, so that appropriate action may be taken to prevent these contaminants from endangering public health.

CEC staff research where and how a CEC is used in the state, its potential to enter the water supply, and its toxicity to humans. Staff calculate a contaminant water concentration that is not harmful to people (“guidance”). However, for some contaminants, the guidance may describe the hazard posed by the chemical instead of a certain level in water. Staff will research and provide guidance for at least six contaminants each year.

For more information on the work done under the CEC program, see the Program Activities page.
