Chemicals Under Review: Minnesota Department of Health

Chemicals Under Review

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) reviews information about chemicals in response to requests for assistance and guidance from programs within MDH and from other state agencies, such as the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department of Agriculture. MDH conducts a review of information on a chemical's toxicity to determine if a health-based guidance value for groundwater, air or other environmental media can be developed or updated.

The following is a list of chemicals for which review has been initiated, including those being completed under the Drinking Water Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CEC) program. Chemicals will be added to this list as new reviews are initiated. Chemicals will remain on this list at least 30 days from the date that they are posted. During that time, MDH invites interested parties to submit and discuss toxicity studies that relate to these chemicals and that are relevant to human health.

Upon completion of review or re-evaluation, chemicals are removed from the table below and added to the Human Health-based Water Guidance Values Table. To view the date the chemical was posted for review and the date guidance was issued for completed chemicals see Health-Based Guidance Review History. For more information, contact the Health Risk Assessment Unit.

**MDH has placed the quantitative review of atrazine and its degradates on hold until it can be determined whether the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reassessment announced on October 7, 2009 will result in new information that would enhance MDH's review. At the request of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA), MDH has completed a human health assessment as part of MDA's special registration review of atrazine released January 15, 2010.

***A review of PFHxS is on hold until enough information is available to conduct a review. In the interim, MDH recommends using the health-based value for PFOS as a surrogate for PFHxS. This PFC has a longer half-life in humans than PFOS and appears to be similar in toxicity.

****Chemical guidance derived from 2008 to present using the methods described in the 2008 SONAR are re-evaluated on an approximately five year schedule. The goal of the re-evaluations is to identify whether existing guidance values are up-to-date with the current available scientific information as well as to update the guidance to the most current MDH risk assessment methodology.
