Environmental Health Specialist/Sanitarian
Exam Study Groups
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) provides assistance for those interested in taking the examination to become a registered sanitarian.
MDH has study materials available at the MDH library. The textbook MDH uses at this time is Environmental Engineering and Sanitation; Fourth Edition, by Joseph Salvato. The fifth edition of this book is available from the National Environmental Health Association. A study guide developed by the CDC is also available at the MDH library.
Sanitarian exam study sessions are held quarterly at the Snelling Office Park facility located on Energy Park Drive in St. Paul (map and driving directions) or in other locations agreed upon by the group. The study sessions are opportunities for individuals with different employment backgrounds to study for the exam together and discuss environmental health topics which include water, wastewater, food protection, radiation, general environmental health, swimming pools, institutional environmental health, solid waste, statutes and regulations, and administration of an environmental health program.
The National Environmental Health Association's website, has information about the examination, additional reference books, and sample questions.
For more information about the study sessions, contact Jeffrey Peterson at 218-308-2124 or by email at jeffrey.peterson@state.mn.us.
