Hearing and Vision Screening
The Minnesota Department of Health’s (MDH) Hearing (for children beyond the newborn time frame) and Vision Screening program is intended to identify children who are in need of further evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.
Because learning is mostly accomplished through the senses of vision and hearing, screenings help to identify any barriers that would impair a child’s ability to learn. Early identification and treatment can prevent or at least alleviate many of the problems that result from impaired hearing or vision. Screening is the most practical approach to identifying children in need of professional services.
These programs are intended for use in programs such as:
- Child and Teen Checkups
- Early Head Start and Head Start
- Early Childhood Screening of Kindergarten entry
- School Programs
- Wellness programs that screen children’s vision and hearing
