Narrator

Prior to screening, the screener should briefly explain what he/she will be doing during the examination. Then the screener and caregiver can move into position.

First, they should sit facing each other with their knees touching. Next, the child should be laid on the screener’s lap with his/her head securely nestled against the screener’s abdomen. The caregiver should also secure the child in place at the shoulders. Lastly, with gloved hands, the screener should lift the child’s lips, feel the soft tissues, check the physical conditions of the teeth, gum, and tongue and look throughout the mouth. Gums and tissues should be pink, soft, and moist.

The “Lift the lip” screening procedure is a practical way to physically check a child’s mouth and determine abnormal conditions that can be referred to a dentist. Screening by a health care professional for early signs of oral and dental health problems can help promote referral to a dentist for treatment and assures that a child has every opportunity to achieve physical, mental, and social health for years to come.
