Infant Foods - Frequently Asked Questions

MN WIC Program

Now that infants get cereal and Fruits & Vegetables at 6 months, should we still suggest they start with infant cereal first, or doesn't it matter any more? (05/27/09)

Cereal does not have to be the first food, however it is a good introductory food because it:

  • Is easily digested;
  • Is least likely to cause an allergic reaction;
  • Contains important nutrients; and
  • Can be altered in texture to meet an infant's developmental needs

Has the order for introducing foods changed for the breastfed infant? Should meat be introduced earlier, to provide iron and zinc? (05/27/09)

Yes, fully breastfed infants require additional sources of iron and zinc beginning at about 6 months, and infant meats are a good source in a highly bio-available form.
