Now that infants get cereal and Fruits & Vegetables at 6 months, should we still suggest they start with infant cereal first, or doesn't it matter any more? (05/27/09)
Cereal does not have to be the first food, however it is a good introductory food because it:
- Is easily digested;
- Is least likely to cause an allergic reaction;
- Contains important nutrients; and
- Can be altered in texture to meet an infant's developmental needs

Yes, fully breastfed infants require additional sources of iron and zinc beginning at about 6 months, and infant meats are a good source in a highly bio-available form.
