MAC (Mothers and Children) - Frequently Asked Questions
MN WIC Program
When we implement the new Food Packages and the 1-year certification for all breastfeeding women, women categorized as "Some-Breastfeeding women" will be eligible to remain on the program, but not be eligible to receive a WIC food package. In the past we would have referred those women to MAC. Can we keep them on WIC (in order to count them as breastfeeding) and still refer them to MAC, for a food package? (06/17/09
They may not participate in both programs simultaneously (this would be dual participation). Of course, it is most important that they have enough food to eat, so certainly any woman who you suspect might be at risk, and need the additional food, should be encouraged to apply for MAC.
In all other cases, CPAs should explain the options available to these women: notify them that they may continue their WIC certification until their baby's first birthday and receive WIC breastfeeding support and nutrition education. Also tell them that they might be eligible to participate in and receive a food package from the MAC Program. (Of course, space in MAC is not guaranteed.) Explain that they will need to choose one or the other.
