Milk and Cheese - Frequently Asked Questions

MN WIC Program

Is powdered milk available for homeless participants? (05/27/09)

CPAs will use the standard food items to create a food package for a homeless participant. If the participant requires powdered milk, CPAs should select it from the customized drop-down list. Otherwise, a "Homeless" drop-down option has been added, which includes the following milk items: 0.0 quarts milk (Fat-Free/Skim or 1%) and 0.0 quarts milk (2% or Whole).

For powdered, milk, could you give 2 (8 quart) and 2 (3 quart) to get 22 quarts total? (05/27/09)

Yes, CPAs can provide any combination of milk items as long as the total amount does not exceed the maximum allowed for the WIC category.

If Fully Breastfeeding, can you replace the 1 lb. cheese from enhanced to milk? And if so, how much milk would that be? Will we get an over-the-maximum message? (05/27/09)

Yes, the 1 lb. of cheese provided in the Enhanced Foods can be replaced with 3 quarts of milk, for a total of 27 quarts of milk for a Fully BF woman. The maximum amounts for WIC Type "Breastfeeding Women" are set for a woman Fully Breastfeeding Multiple Infants (i.e., 42 quarts allowed in Food Package 7+). CPAs are responsible for knowing the maximum quantities allowed and for providing appropriate amounts. CPAs will NOT receive an "over the limit" message if more than 27 quarts is incorrectly provided. WIC Coordinators will need to monitor issuance.

For the pregnant women up to age 21, the recommendation is 4 cups milk/day. The new food package (FP 5) provides 3 cups milk/day - not quite the DRI for young pregnant women. Are we able to provide more milk to these participants? (05/13/09)

For pregnant women <= 18 years of age, the DRI for calcium is 1300 mg/day; for pregnant women >= 19 years of age, the DRI is 1000 mg/day.

All pregnant women with a singleton pregnancy are eligible for FP 5, regardless of the woman's age. FP 5 provides a maximum of 5 and 1/2 gallons milk/month. This provides about 3 cups of milk/day or about 900 mg of calcium/day. You may NOT provide more than the allowable maximum. CPAs should encourage pregnant teens to consume additional calcium sources.
