Nutrition Education Materials - Frequently Asked Questions

MN WIC Program

In August, if we have old NE cards, should we dispose of them and order revised cards? Are we still following best practice is using the "old" cards? (05/27/09)

The "older" versions of the nutrition education cards do not contain harmful information. The cards were revised last year to be more consistent with the most current nutrition recommendations and to reflect the upcoming changes in the food packages. CPAs can write in changes on the older versions as needed.

Can the State provide information about the revised NE cards: e.g. dates revised and differences in the information provided? (05/27/09)

Some of the NE Cards were revised fall 2008. The newest versions of the cards are available on the Minnesota WIC Program web site at: http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fh/wic/nutrition/morenutinfo.html.

  • The card changes were described in the WIC Wednesday Update on October 22 & 29, and November 5, 2008 and included detailed descriptions of the changes.
  • The majority of the changes were to the infant cards, and they were made to update the recommendations for infant feeding. Recommendations for starting complementary foods now focus on developmental readiness rather than on age.
  • All of the revised English infant cards have been reprinted, so when you order English infant cards, you will receive the newest versions.
  • Spanish and Somali version will be reprinted when the old stock is used up.

On current NE cards, don't we suggest introducing solids at 5 months? (05/27/09)

The newest version of the card "Starting Solids" does not suggest an age for starting solids. Rather the introduction of solids should be based on developmental cues.

Will infant NE card "Start Meats & Textures" be changed to recommend meat at 6 months? (05/27/09)

That recommendation for breastfed infants is included in the new version of "Starting Solids".

Will new NE cards be available to support the new food package? (Specific requests included: How to increase milk use if child "only likes cheese"; tips for using goat milk, acidophilus milk and soy beverage; information on lactose-free diets; how to use tofu and/or other soy food items.) (05/27/09)

Information on how to increase milk use is currently available on the Minnesota WIC Program web site, under WIC Foods. The WIC Foods section of the web site will be updated and available when the new food package is implemented. Some of the issues listed above will be addressed on the web site. Additionally, we will be working with the Nutrition Education Workgroup to evaluate the needs for additional nutrition education materials related to the new food packages.

Will you have materials about the changes in other languages? It's going to be difficult to explain to ethnic groups on the language line. (05/27/09)

Some materials explaining the food package changes are available in other languages. See the Minnesota WIC Program web site at: http://www.health.state.mn.us/divs/fh/wic/localagency/nutrition/fpchange/materials/new/index.html.
