Are stores required to have in stock all four whole grain items: bread, tortillas, brown rice and oatmeal? (05/20/09)
No. Stores are required to stock at least three of the four options. Stores in Tier 1 (Anoka, Dakota, Hennepin and Ramsey counties) must stock 5 pounds of WIC-allowed whole grains; stores in Tier 2 (all other counties) must stock 3 pounds.
Are stores required to carry soy beverage and tofu?(05/20/09)
No. There is no minimum stock requirement for either soy beverage or tofu. However, if a customer (WIC Participant) request either item, the store must ensure that a sufficient quantity is in stock and available for purchase within one week of the request. Local agencies should inform participants of this, when appropriate. Most large stores will carry these products routinely. However, you could encourage participants to contact the store in advance to see if the item(s) are available. Most smaller stores will need advance notice to order these items.
If a participant "goes over" the amount on their Fruit & Vegetable voucher, will stores accept payment for the amount over the voucher? (05/20/09)
If a participant exceeds the amount listed on the Fruit & Vegetable voucher, they can pay the difference with cash, credit card or EBT.
At grocery stores, will WIC participants be able to get less than the amount printed on their voucher? (05/20/09)
Yes. They may do this now, and will be able to do so with the new food package.
