Training for All New Staff

MN WIC Program Information and Resources for Local Agencies

A training and staff development program for local WIC agency staff is key to maintaining quality services. The following steps, in addition to on-the-job training, will assure new WIC staff will have the knowledge and skills to perform their role in the WIC clinic.

STEP 1: Staff Training Requirements

All new WIC staff must go through an initial training program. A new staff person must either complete all activities of the Training Plan for New Employees (WORD: 22KB/2 pages) or complete a similar training program provided by the local agency. Training provided by the local agency must cover all topics included in the state Training Plan. Ifc you have questions about your local agency training, contact your nutrition and program consultants.

STEP 2: Training Plan for New Employees

Print the Training Plan for New Employees (WORD: 22KB/2 pages) to use as a checklist with all new employees to assure core tasks and responsibilities are completed. The Training Plan for New Employees outlines WIC functions, required training activities and completion requirements.

STEP 3: Training Modules on Certification Procedures

Complete the following training modules. The modules provide an overview of certification procedures.

STEP 4: Training Modules on Counseling Skills

All WIC CPA Staff: Choose from one of the following two options

  • Option 2: Washington WIC Connects Participant Centered Education Modules available on-line at WIC Connects (scroll down to the Participant Centered Education section). Each module includes a number of activities in the resource section. The preceptor should determine which activities should be completed. Complete the following 10 modules.

  • Module 1 - What Motivates People to Change
  • Module 2 – The Spirit of PCE
  • Module 3 – Opening the Conversation
  • Module 4 – O.A.R.S.
  • Module 5 – Roadblocks to Listening
  • Module 6 – Moving from Assessment to Counseling
  • Module 7 – Providing Advice: Offering Nutrition Education
  • Module 8 – Rolling with Resistance
  • Module 9 - Next Steps

STEP 5: Training in Nutrition

All WIC CPA Staff: The training preceptor should evaluate the nutrition knowledge/skills of each new CPA staff member and provide training and resources based on the needs of the individual. Your nutrition consultant can assist you with this process if needed. The Minnesota WIC Nutrition Modules may be used as an adjunct to your local agency's nutrition training. See below.

Nutrition Modules Preceptors: Review the objectives of the modules with the new CPA to identify areas or modules for training. The objectives are found on this webpage. Each module includes an on-line post-test that may be reviewed with the preceptor as needed. CPA staff members that do not have a nutrition degree should complete all of these modules.

STEP 6: Training Modules for High-Risk Care

CPA staff that will be providing High-Risk care and follow-up (Individual Nutrition Care Plans) must review the following:

  • Read the following sections of the High Risk Counseling Guide:
  • Introduction
  • Policies
  • High Risk Criteria
  • Documentation/SOAP Notes
  • Staff should become familiar with the assessment and counseling recommendations for each high-risk condition.

STEP 7: Continuing Education Credits

Continuing education credits are available for some modules. To obtain a Certificate of Completion for each completed module, fax the Training Plan for New Employees (WORD: 22KB/2 pages) to Sandy Sather at 651-215-8951.

  • Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians: The following CPEs for RDs and DTRs have been approved:
  • Breastfeeding Promotion- 1 CPE
  • Anthropometic measurements- 3 CPEs
  • Hematological measurements and assessment- 1 CPE
  • Medical and Diet Assessment- 2 CPEs
  • Risk Code manual and workbook- 3 CPEs
  • Food Package- 3 CPEs

All RDs and DTRs are now on the Professional Development Portfolio system. Keep the Certificates of Completion for your Portfolio records.

  • Minnesota Licensed Dietitians and Nutritionists: See RD/DTR information above for determining CEUs. Retain appropriate documentation for your files.
  • Registered Nurse and Licensed Practical Nurses: This activity has been designed to meet the Minnesota Board of Nursing continuing education requirements. However, the nurse is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education. Retain appropriate documentation for your files.

Please note: Nursing credits are based on 50 minutes/credit. CPEs are based on 60 minutes/credit.
