Nursing Assistant Registry

The Nursing Assistant Registry lists nursing assistants who have met Minnesota training and testing standards to work in nursing homes and certified boarding care homes. The registry also has information about nursing assistants who have substantiated findings of abuse, neglect, and theft.

This is not an online registry. Instead, nursing assistants, employers, and others can check the registry by using MDH's automated phone system and the nursing assistant's social security number.

Effective April 1, 2016 - Nursing Assistant Retest

Any nursing assistant who took the challenge test at either the Blue Sky or Inver Hills testing sites between the dates of May 1, 2014, and October 16, 2015, was required to retest and pass the nursing assistant test at the Dakota County Technical College by March 31, 2016.

Starting April 1, 2016, any nursing assistant who failed to meet this requirement will be placed on inactive status on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry (NAR). These nursing assistants will be unable to work in any federally certified nursing home or federally certified board and care home.

NEXT STEPS:

Nursing Assistants:
If you did not retake and pass the nursing assistant test by March 31, 2016, you will be required to retake the test, at your own cost, at any approved testing site in Minnesota if you wish to work as a nursing assistant at a federally certified nursing home or board and care home in the state. Once the registry is notified by the testing administrator that you have passed the test, your status on the registry will be changed to active. At that time you can work in a federally certified nursing home or board and care home. However, if you failed to pass the nursing assistant test three times, you are required to attend an approved nursing assistant training course before you may retake the test. For additional information, please contact the Minnesota Department of Health using the contact information provided below.

Employers:
To verify whether your employee is allowed to continue working as a nursing assistant after March 31, 2016, you may: 1) request a copy of your employee’s nursing assistant certification documenting successful completion of the nursing assistant test after December 2015; or 2) contact the Minnesota Department of Health using the contact information below to verify your employee’s NAR status.

For additional information, please contact the Minnesota Department of Health at Health.nurseaidetesting@state.mn.us or call 651-201-4131, starting on Friday, April 1, 2016.
