The Minnesota Legislature passed legislation related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in the 2009 and 2011 session.

The 2009 legislation directed the Minnesota Board on Aging to establish the Alzheimer’s Disease Working Group (ADWG) to study the status of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in Minnesota to more fully understand and address the issues presented by the increase in the older population and the expected increase in the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

The 2011 legislation directed the Minnesota Commissioner of Health to review currently available quality measures for identification and care of people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, develop a health care homes learning collaborative curriculum and review the literature to estimate the differences in outcomes and costs with early identification, care-giver support and community-based supports.
