Macrobiotic Dietary Guidelines

Macrobiotics has been used to describe a philosophy, a cultural movement, and an eating pattern. In recent years it has come to be thought of as a dietary approach to cancer, popularized by the well known proponent, Michio Kushi.

The standard macrobiotic diet consists of 50% whole grains, 30% vegetables, 10% beans, and 5% sea vegetables. Occasional foods include fruit, white meat fish, seeds, and nuts. To the extent possible, foods should be organic, minimally processed, and prepared in a variety of ways. Food generally avoided on this diet includes meat, poultry, animal fat, dairy, refined sugar, artificial sweeteners, and chemical additives.
