How MDH, schools, local communities, and statewide partners are making a difference
Schools are at the front lines of childhood health.
In school children learn much more than math and English, they learn about what food is valued and what food is not, but they learn this less through lesson plans and more through role-modeling every day at breakfast, snack, in classroom celebrations and at lunch.
Have you been to see what's being served in your children's schools lately? You may be amazed.
“I am very pleased that the school district is addressing student wellness issues. ... I believe it is the school’s responsibility to foster a premium positive health environment through education, outreach and role modeling.”--a Dakota County Schools parent
Over three-quarters of Minnesota public schools have participated in trainings and committed to improving lunches, breakfasts, snacks, and all foods offered in schools. Farm to School efforts are under way to increase access to local produce in at least 367 schools and 22 school districts across Minnesota, serving more than 200,000 students.
