How To Stop Youth Access to Tobacco
The "How to Stop Youth Access to Tobacco" retail education material was developed by the Minnesota Tobacco and Prevention Initiative. Much of the material was adapted from existing literature. The materials include the following:1. Youth and Tobacco Facts
It is important for clerks to understand the problems and risks faced by youth who use tobacco. This knowledge will help clerks understand why it's important to prevent tobacco sales to minors.
2. Minnesota Laws and Penalties
Read about the laws of Minnesota that pertain to tobacco sales and proof-of-age and the penalties that may be imposed for breaking these laws.
3. Proper Identification
Clerks should study this information and the separate handout included with this packet to become familiar with the various forms of acceptable identification, which the customer must present before a tobacco sale is completed.
4. Store Benefits and Policies
Read how your store, staff and the community all benefit when you prevent tobacco sales to minors. You also send a very important message to the community-your store cares about its clientele.
5. Role Play
It is important that clerks practice handling a variety of customer situations. Help your clerks practice these scenarios and then use this section as a discussion tool during a training session.
6. Tips For Clerks Who Are Responsible for Checking I.D.'s
7. Employer Agreement
