Hearing Instrument Dispenser (HID) Written Exam Instructions

Minnesota uses the International Hearing Society’s International Licensing Exam (ILE) as the written portion of the expansion used to certify applicants as Hearing Instrument Dispensers. As of March 1, 2014, the ILE will only be available at a testing center. This exam will be computer based.¬†Applicants must pass the written exam before they may sit for the practical examination.

  1. Fill out the Request to Schedule HID Written Exam (PDF: 115KB/1 page) and submit at least thirty (30) days prior to the preferred practical exam date. The Request to Schedule can be submitted via fax, email, or regular mail.
  2. Once the application is received, we will notify International Hearing Society (IHS) of your eligibility to take the written exam.
  3. IHS will confirm your eligibility and will send you an email to create an account. Once you have created an account, you must wait three (3) days.
  4. After the three (3) day period, you will log into your account. At that time you will be able to schedule the written exam. You will pay for IHS fee for the written exam at that time, which costs $225.
  5. You will arrive at the test center on the date you choose and sit for the written exam.
  6. After taking the exam, your results are sent to IHS.
  7. IHS will create a score report and mail the results to the Department.
  8. You will be notified in writing of your written exam results.
