Mortuary Science: Continuing Education -Minnesota Department of Health

Continuing Education

As of January 1, 2016, the Mortuary Science Program will no longer honor CE waivers. The mortuary science statutes do not authorize the Program to waive CE.

If you have a Mortuary Science License you are required by MN Statute 149A.40, Subd. 11 to complete 15 hours of continuing education. If you are retired or no longer practicing you may apply for Emeritus status which does not require you to complete any continuing education. Please refer to MN Statute 149A.45 for more detailed information on Emeritus status.

All licensed morticians who currently have an active mortuary science license ending in an odd number are required to obtain continuing education reports during odd year renewal cycles (2017, 2019, etc). All licensed morticians who currently have an active mortuary science license ending in an even number are required to obtain continuing education during even year renewal cycle (2018, 2020, etc.) For example, if John Doe's license number is M-1234, he must obtain his CE credits before January 1, 2018.

All licensees should be prepared to submit their reports if the Minnesota Department of Health notifies them of a CEU audit.

Minnesota Statute 149A.40, Subd. 11 now reads:

Subd. 11. Continuing education. The commissioner shall require 15 continuing education hours for renewal of a license to practice mortuary science. Nine of the hours must be in the following areas body preparation, care, or handling, 3 CE hours; professional practices, 3 CE hours; regulation and ethics, 3 CE hours. Continuing education hours shall be reported to the commissioner every other year based on the licensee's license number. Licensees whose license ends in an odd number must report CE hours at renewal time every odd year. If a licensee's license ends in an even number, the licensee must report the licensee's CE hours at renewal time every even year.

The following calendar contains information on approved continuing education programs. If there is a continuing education program that offers credit to licensees and the program is not listed on the calendar, the provider of the course must apply for approval.
