Botulism (Clostridium botulinum toxin)
Botulism is a rare, but very serious condition caused by toxin produced
by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. The toxins that this
bacterium produces are among the most poisonous substances known to humans.
Three forms of naturally occurring botulism affecting humans exist:
foodborne, wound, and intestinal. All forms of botulism result from absorption
of botulinum toxin into the bloodstream. The toxin does not penetrate
intact skin. Inhalational botulism is a man-made form of disease that
results from inhaling aerosolized botulinum toxin.
