Influenza Activity Surveillance
- The percentage of tests positive for influenza during week 17 as reported from the MN Lab System (MLS) Laboratory Influenza Surveillance Program
- rapid influenza testing: 13.2%
- PCR testing: 4.0%
- Viral culture: 4 influenza B positives
- The most commonly cultured strain identified so far this season at the MDH Public Health Laboratory is influenza A/H3.
- 7 people were hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza during week 17. Since the start of the influenza season, 3,084 persons have been hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed influenza.
- No influenza-related deaths were confirmed during week 17. Since the start of the influenza season, 194 influenza-related deaths have been confirmed.
- No long-term care facilities (defined as a skilled nursing facility) reported confirmed outbreaks of influenza during week 17. Since the start of the season, 149 outbreaks of influenza in long-term care have been reported.
- No schools reported an outbreak of influenza-like illness (ILI) during week 17. Since the start of the season, 486 outbreaks of ILI in schools have been reported.
- The percentage of influenza-like illness visits to outpatient clinics involved in the U.S. Outpatient Influenza-like Illness Surveillance (ILINet) was below the regional baseline at 0.16%.
Circulating Respiratory Pathogen Surveillance
- Of specimens tested by PCR from 3 outpatient sites for circulating viral respiratory pathogens in the previous 3 weeks for which data are available:
- 15% were positive for influenza, of these
- 82% were positive for influenza B
- 9% were positive for influenza A/H1
- 9% were positive for influenza A/H3
- 13% were positive for human metapneumovirus
- 11% were positive for rhinovirus
- 6% were positive for coronavirus, of these
- 50% were positive for coronavirus OC43
- 25% were positive for coronavirus HKU1
- 25% were positive for coronavirus 229E
- 4% were positive for adenovirus
- 3% were positive for parainfluenza virus 3
- 1% were positive for respiratory synctial virus (RSV)
- 15% were positive for influenza, of these
- Of specimens culture positive for a viral pathogen at Minnesota’s 6 virology laboratories during week 17:
- 4 were positive for influenza B
