Hib Survey

  • During February 2009, the Minnesota Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are surveying 2000 children between the ages of 6 weeks and 5 years to see if they are colonized with Haemophilus Influenzae type B (Hib).

  • This survey is being carried out after the increase in cases of severe Hib disease in 2008.  The proportion of children who are colonized with Hib is very low (less than one per hundred).

  • The survey will help to us learn how many children are colonized with Hib, and if more efforts are needed to control the spread of Hib. Participation is voluntary.
