Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling
Purpose: This one-day workshop has been designed to improve the ability of providers in a variety of settings to support individuals in making behavior changes that will reduce their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV. Skills for prevention counseling and administering risk assessments for HIV and STD testing will be learned and practiced.
This training is a requirement for staff at agencies that are directly funded by MDH to implement HIV testing. This course will also benefit counselors, nurses, street outreach workers and social workers in a variety of settings such as family planning/community clinics, STD clinics, HIV testing clinics, chemical dependency programs and correctional institutions.
Prerequisites: Participants are expected to have a basic foundation of knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention.

1 day course – three opportunities: April 29, July 29, and October 21
9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.Location: American Lung Association, 490 Concordia Avenue in St. Paul, MN.
Fee: There is no cost to staff or volunteers from agencies that receive direct funding from MDH to provide HIV or STD testing.
For participants from non-contracted organizations the course fee is $35.00 and 7 CEUs will be offered.Registration:

Hepatitis C Rapid Test Training

This course will include an HCV primer, pre and post-test counseling skills, and hands on skills training with the new Orasure HCV Rapid test kit.
No cost for MDH funded grantees or employees to attend. Four (4) continuing education credit hours will be offered upon completion. Please register as soon as possible, space is very limited.Registration:

HIV Test Results
Purpose: This workshop builds on the skills acquired during the “Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling” workshop. The course will address the issues of clients who receive positive and negative HIV test results. Special attention is paid to addressing the impact of delivering and receiving an HIV positive test result, and addressing the issues of the newly diagnosed client. In addition, it will discuss the CDC HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral Guidelines.
This training is a requirement for staff or volunteers at agencies that are directly funded by MDH to implement HIV testing. This course is beneficial to anyone who performs HIV testing and provides results to clients.
Prerequisites: Participants must have completed the “Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling” course and to have a basic foundation of knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention. (It is recommended that both trainings be taken in the same two-day period.)

HIV Testing Data and Bloodborne Pathogen Training
The first half of this training has been designed to provide guidance, instruction, and hands-on experience in filling out the HIV Testing System forms required for agencies and providers funded by MDH/CDC to conduct HIV testing. Discussion will include information about the different testing technologies that are used in the field today, and an overview of surveillance and mandated reporting. HIV Testing Data is a requirement for staff at agencies that are directly funded by MDH/CDC to implement HIV testing. The second half of this training fulfills the annual OSHA requirement of a Bloodborne Pathogen Training for anyone who has potential blood or needle-stick exposure in the workplace. This training is limited to, but an annual requirement of, staff at agencies that are supported by MDH/CDC to conduct HIV and/or HCV testing.
Objectives: Upon completion of this training, participants will be able to:
- Complete and submit required data collection forms
- Understand disease reporting rules
- Have an awareness of their bloodborne pathogen and needle-stick risk in the workplace
- Know the components of an exposure control plan
*This course is only open to agencies that receive direct funding from MDH to provide HIV/ HCV Testing. Both of the above listed workshops are required prerequisites. There is no cost for this training.

HIV Instructor Training (non-MDH training)
This 2–day course prepares individuals to become community educators knowledgeable in HIV basics such as prevention, transmission, testing and HIV-related statutes and policies. Individuals will learn how to effectively communicate basic HIV messages in a sensitive, non-judgmental style using different strategies for various audiences. Participants will demonstrate their knowledge and gain public speaking skills through communication exercises. Participants will also gain tools and resources that can be used in providing HIV education in group settings.
Minnesota AIDS Project coordinates a volunteer speakers bureau that provides certified instructors the chance to conduct HIV education in community settings such as chemical dependency treatment centers, colleges, social service agencies, and more. If you would like to become involved with this program, you must have completed the 2–day Red Cross HIV Instructor training to obtain certification. Your involvement in this program is voluntary and there is no time commitment required.
The cost of the course is $75.00. Partial scholarships are available for individuals experiencing significant financial hardship, but limited in number. Individuals must attend both days of the training to receive certification.

HIV Professional Development Course (non-MDH training)
This 1–day course is designed for individuals seeking an advanced training on HIV disease and information on how to provide competent and sensitive care for individuals living with HIV. This training is well suited for health and social service providers, professionals working in the HIV/STI/Hepatitis C fields, and students pursuing graduate degrees in social work, public health, nursing and other human service fields. This training has been approved for 7 hours of Continuing Education credits by the Board of Social Work.
Training topics include:
- HIV transmission, prevention, disease progression, testing and treatment advances
- Medical updates on viral hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections
- Professional boundaries, confidentiality laws and duty-to-warn considerations for social service providers working with HIV positive clients
- Counseling considerations for assisting clients through the HIV disclosure process
- State and local resources for HIV prevention programs and services for those living with HIV
- Tools for providing HIV education in group settings
The cost of this course is $75.00. Lunch is included. This training has been approved for 7 hours of Continuing Education credits by the Board of Social Work.
