Asian American & Pacific Islanders (API) Heritage and Health Matters! Event

The purpose of the event is to commemorate National API HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (May 19th) and Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May).  The event will combine cultural performances and food with health presentations and discussions in several different API languages including Hmong, Karen and Tibetan. Health topics covered at the event include heart health, mental health, and sexual health including HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections, and many more health topics. Free HIV testing and counseling will be available. The event is free and open to the general public. Examples include: Rural AIDS Action Network (RAAN), Hennepin County Public Health Clinic, Clinic 555 Sexual Health Services, West Side Community Health Services, Teenage Medical Service (TAMS), Face-to-Face Health and Counseling Service, Family Tree Clinic, University Family Physicians/North Memorial, Open Door Clinic in Mankato, etc.

The Minnesota Department of Health lists their publicly funded HIV testing sites and supported outreach and HIV testing projects online.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a HIV test site locator and you can find out where to get an HIV test online by entering your Zip Code: http://www.hivtest.org/. Also, CDC has launched a new campaign, HIV Screening. Standard Care, to assist physicians in making HIV testing a standard part of medical care.

African Health Action Corporation (AHA) offers HIV and hepatitis C testing, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Monday – Friday. The agency is located at: 3355 Hiawatha Avenue, #202, Minneapolis, MN 55406. Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling Training (1 day course)

This one day workshop has been designed to improve the ability of providers in a variety of settings to support individuals in making behavior changes that will reduce their risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV.  Skills for administering risk assessments for HIV and STD testing will be learned and practiced. This training is a requirement for staff at agencies that are directly funded by MDH to implement HIV testing. This course will also benefit counselors, nurses, street outreach workers and social workers in a variety of settings such as family planning/community clinics, STD clinics, HIV testing clinics, chemical dependency programs and correctional institutions. Participants are expected to have a basic foundation of knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention.

HIV Test Results Training (1 day course)

This one day course will benefit staff that perform HIV testing and provide results to clients. This workshop builds on the skills acquired during the “Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling” workshop. The course will discuss the HIV Counseling, Testing and Referral Guidelines and indications for routine and/or targeted testing. In addition, it will address the issues of clients who receive positive and negative HIV test results. 

This training is a requirement for staff at agencies that are directly funded by MDH to implement HIV testing.  The “Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling” course is a prerequisite.  Participants are expected to have a basic foundation of knowledge of HIV transmission and prevention.

Only grantees directly funded by CDC/MDH to do testing may take this training. There is no cost for this training, but participants must have completed the “Fundamentals of HIV Prevention Counseling” and “HIV Test Results” courses. Please register as soon as possible.
