Although local transmission of malaria frequently occurred in Minnesota over 100 years ago, all of the cases reported in Minnesota residents in recent years have occurred in recent immigrants and travelers to foreign countries. Since 2010, an average of 50-60 cases of malaria have been reported in Minnesota residents each year. The majority of cases likely acquired malaria in Africa with Liberia, Nigeria, and Kenya being the most commonly reported exposure locations.
