Measles Disease Statistics

Measles is currently a rare disease in Minnesota and in the U.S.; however, measles continues to occur commonly in other parts of the world. Measles can be brought into Minnesota by unvaccinated persons who travel to or come from countries where measles is common, and who are infectious with measles after arriving in Minnesota. Measles can spread easily to unvaccinated persons; therefore, maintaining high immunization rates is essential to preventing measles. 

Recent Minnesota measles outbreak information

Dakota County outbreak considered over on September 27, 2011

  • Outbreak included 2 cases of measles linked to an individual who acquired infection in Kenya.

Hennepin County outbreak considered over on June 8, 2011

  • Outbreak included 20 cases of measles linked to an individual who acquired infection in Kenya.
  • Immunization recommendations during this outbreak included an early 2nd MMR dose for Hennepin County residents.
  • Providers may resume the routine schedule which is to give the second MMR at 4-6 years of age.
