Mumps outbreaks and vaccination recommendations

  • There are no outbreaks of mumps occurring in Minnesota at this time. There are usually about 10-20 mumps cases reported in the state each year.
  • Several large mumps outbreaks are occurring outside of Minnesota, typically at a university or college. Those institutions may formally recommend a 3rd dose of MMR to help control the outbreak.
  • Minnesota health care providers should give a 3rd dose of MMR to individuals that attend a university or college where a 3rd dose of MMR has been recommended. The 3rd dose recommendation does not apply to family members or close contacts who do not also attend the affected institution.
