Varicella (Chickenpox) and Zoster (Shingles) Statistics
The incidence of chickenpox has changed over the last 15 years with the introduction of chickenpox vaccine and new immunization recommendations and requirements. MDH asks all schools to report all cases of chickenpox in students and/or staff and all cases of shingles that occur in students. Up through the 2011-12 school year, MDH randomly selected a sample of schools to serve as sentinel surveillance sites. Sentinel schools were asked to report all chickenpox cases in students and staff during the school year. Data reported from the sentinel schools were used to estimate statewide chickenpox incidence.
