Varicella (Chickenpox) and Zoster (Shingles) Statistics
The incidence of chickenpox has changed over the last 15 years with the introduction of chickenpox vaccine and new immunization recommendations and requirements. MDH asks all schools to report outbreaks of chickenpox in students and/or staff and individual cases of shingles that occur in students. In addition, MDH randomly selects a sample of schools to serve as sentinel surveillance sites. Sentinel schools are asked to report all chickenpox cases in students and staff during the school year. Data reported from the sentinel schools are used to estimate statewide chickenpox incidence.
