Setting up a Billing Program for Immunization Services

  • National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES): National Provider Identifier (NPI)
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requires each health care provider, clinic and laboratory to obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) for insurance billing from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The NPI number is intended to be a unique identifier for each health plan to use and it does not expire. Attention: Non-MDH link
  • Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services: Taxonomy
The Healthcare Provider Taxonomy Code Set is used to categorize the type, classification and/or specialization of a health care provider. When applying for a National Provider Identifier (NPI), a health care provider must select the Provider Taxonomy Code or code description that most closely describes their professional training. This code is used to help uniquely identify health care providers in order to assign them an NPI. Attention: Non-MDH link
