HEALTH REFORM
All 87 Minnesota counties are now covered under the Statewide Health Improvement Program. An integral part of Minnesota’s health reform law, the program strives to help Minnesotans lead longer, healthier lives by reducing the chronic diseases caused by tobacco use and exposure, poor nutrition and physical inactivity.

Health Care Home certification informational conference call December 16. A draft of the health care home certification assessment tool is online. Potential applicants are encouraged to use this. When clinicians are implementing all the standards listed in this tool, they are ready to apply for certification.

Health Care Homes Mini Grant Program applications due December 15. Up to $2,000 is available to help clinics improve their ability to be patient-centered health care homes.  

Provider Peer Grouping System contract available.

MORE MDH News
Terri Helland joined MDH Office of Public Health Practice as public health nurse consultant for the Southwest Region and the western half of the South Central Region, working out of the Mankato and Marshall District Offices.

Minnesota e-Health Initiative has updated its Web site to provide easier access for Advisory Committee and Work Group participants, policymakers and elected officials, hospitals and providers, and consumers on specific topics of interest. See Hot Topics in the left navigation bar.

Three new Health Economics Program reports are online showing:
      • Growth of private health insurance premiums and underlying claims was moderate
         in 2008 and
total health care spending for all Minnesota residents in 2007 grew modestly
      • Over the long term spending and premium growth remain unsustainable
      • In 2007, distribution of insurance coverage in Minnesota remained largely unchanged
         compared to 2006.

Minnesota Health Care Workforce in 2008

More than 244,000 Minnesotans were employed in health care occupations in Minnesota in May 2008, according to the U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.The most visible health care occupations – physicians, physician assistants and nurses – accounted for just over one-third of the total.

Overall, 63 percent of health care workers are in practitioner and technical occupations, and 37 percent in generally lower paying health care support occupations. Within the latter category, home health aides and nursing aides, orderlies and attendants account for more than one-fourth of all health care workers.

Staff News
Jay Fonkert, senior workforce analyst, has created all but one of our Snapshots. In January, Jay will retire after over 30 years with Minnesota state government, five of those with ORHPC. We will miss Jay and his work!

Jill Myers completed the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health Leadership Institute.

Anne Schloegel visited LifeCare Medical Center and Altru Clinic in Roseau to discuss their electronic health record implementation.

Mark Schoenbaum begins a term as president of the National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health (NOSORH) in January. NOSORH is the membership organization of the 50 State Offices of Rural Health. Its mission is to promote the capacity of state offices of rural health to improve health care in rural America through leadership development, advocacy, education and partnerships.

Amy Vallery exhibited at the American Student Dental Association annual vendor fair, providing University of Minnesota Dental Students with an opportunity to learn about the dental loan forgiveness program.

Fremont Community Clinic executive director Steve Knutson hopes for more incentives for patients to improve their health.

Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids and Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park were ranked in Thomson Reuters’ 100 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals.

Minneapolis-based MinuteClinic expanded to become a participating provider with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Oklahoma.

Marty Witrak, College of St. Scholastica School of Nursing dean and chair of the Rural HIT Coalition, is quoted in Preparing for an IT Talent Squeeze article.
