SNAPSHOT of Minnesota Health Care Workforce

Five percent of Minnesota physicians are hospitalists according to a preliminary analysis of 2009 workforce survey responses. More than half of these hospitalists (249) listed internal medicine or family practice as their primary specialty.

Based on the analysis of a 2007 survey of community hospitals, the Society of Hospital Medicine found there were over 23,000 hospitalists in the United States. More than half of U.S. hospitals reported having a hospitalist program. According to the study, the number of hospitalists grew 20 percent from 2006 to 2007, and another 20 percent increase was projected from 2007 to 2009. Most hospitalists are general internists trained in family practice or pediatric medicine.

Hospital-based physicians have been found to improve the performance of hospitals and health care systems. They assume the care of a hospitalized patient from admission to discharge shifting away from primary care-directed hospital care.
