SNAPSHOT
Minnesota Health Care Workforce

Minnesota has fostered collaborative practice between dentists and dental hygienists since 2001, allowing hygienists to perform additional procedures under direct or indirect supervision of a dentist.

According to the 2008-2009 survey of Minnesota working dental hygienists, 7 percent said they were actively participating under a collaborative agreement, while 20 percent said they did not know if they were practicing under a collaborative agreement. Based on the responses, it appears “collaborative dental hygienists” are practicing in a metropolitan or micropolitan area rather than a rural area.
