SNAPSHOT of Minnesota Health Care Workforce
Proportion of Active Primary Care Physicians by RUCA in Minnesota 2009-2010
bar graph of physicians in MN by RUCA

One method for comparing the proportion of primary care physicians to population is to use the zip code rural-urban commuting areas (RUCAs). This method, developed by WWAMI Rural Health Research Center, captures greater rural and urban variations within regions than can be achieved using standard county boundaries. Minnesota RUCA Map

Where road travel time to the nearest major metropolitan city or urban cluster is 60 minutes or less (urban areas), the presence of primary physicians is disproportionate to the population living in urban areas (77 percent versus 70 percent). For residents in isolated areas, like Canby or Hallock, where road travel time to the closest city or urban cluster is greater than 60 minutes, an absence of primary care physicians compared to the population (3 percent versus 10 percent) indicates residents may be driving farther to receive primary care services.
