OSHII: About Us

Office of Statewide Health Improvement Initiatives (OSHII)

OSHII supports all Minnesotans in leading healthier lives, raising healthier families and building healthier communities by preventing disease well before it starts.

We work to reduce the rates of the top four underlying causes of preventable illness and early death by:

  • Increasing the percentage of Minnesotans who eat more healthy foods,
  • Increasing the percentage of Minnesotans who are more physically active,
  • Reducing the percentage of Minnesotans who use commercial tobacco products or are exposed to second hand smoke, and
  • Reducing the percentage of Minnesotans who misuse or are harmed by alcohol and other drugs.

We succeed by leveraging local and state partnerships, utilizing evidence-based best practices, conducting rigorous evaluation, and partnering with communities. These strategies support sustainable change toward making the healthy choice the easy choice.

Alcohol & Tobacco Prevention & Control Unit
ATP&C connects health professionals and the public to valuable resources, including reports detailing the effects of tobacco use, educational materials, guidance on community-based tobacco prevention programs and smoking cessation resources, as well as strategies to make healthy choices related to alcohol and other drug use.

Community Initiative Unit
Local governments, businesses, schools, and leaders are the experts when it comes to their communities. Therefore, one key to statewide health improvement  is supporting local public health, tribal health agencies and their partners with effective, science-based strategies, technical assistance and evaluation. By helping communities increase the availability of good nutrition, physical activity and decrease exposure to commercial tobacco products, the Community Initiative Unit is making it easier for Minnesotans to incorporate healthy living as part of their daily lives.

Evaluation Unit
It is critical that the work of OSHII be measured and be effective. It is also our responsibility to educate the public and inform our partners and the public about our work. Therefore, this unit works to support health improvement activities of OSHII through thorough rigorous evaluation and effective communications.

Finance and Administrative Unit

Accurate, thorough financial controls are crucial in a time of scarce resources, while support staff are the glue that keeps OSHII operating efficiently. The Finance and Administrative Unit helps OSHII be effective while being good stewards of precious resources.

Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit (PAN)
The Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit supports Minnesotans to be active, eat healthy foods, and maintain a healthy weight.

State Initiative Unit

The State Initiative Unit works with local public health departments and tribal governments to reduce obesity and tobacco use in communities across the state by addressing physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and commercial tobacco use.
