Preventing Chronic Disease Before it Starts

Heart disease, stroke and cancer kill 52 Minnesotans every day and cost nearly $2 billion in healthcare every year.Up to 35 percent of these deaths could be prevented if our cities, towns and schools supported healthy choices.

Our Priorities

Alcohol and Other Drugs
Many people are affected directly by alcohol and other drugs; however, everyone is affected indirectly by the costs. MDH connects people to resources to prevent alcohol and other drug abuse.

Breastfeeding
New mothers often need good information to get started and keep going. Mothers also need a little help from their employer, from health care providers, schools, and child care providers if they are to be successful.

Early Childhood
A child's health is more than the absence of disease or injury. We provide tools to families and professionals so the children in their care can grow up to be all they can be.

Farm to School
Farm to School means kids eat more fresh, local foods and learn about where their food comes from, all while supporting local farmers. By connecting farms and schools, children, schools and farmers all benefit.

Nutrition
Eating a balanced diet is one of the most important things you can do to maintain and improve health. The nutrition program has information and resources that can help.

Obesity
Maintaining a healthy weight is an extremely important part of overall health. MDH works to decrease obesity in the community and its impact on individuals.

Physical Activity
Physical activity helps people live longer, healthier lives. Find out what you can do to increase physical activity opportunities for yourself and your community.

Safe Routes to School
More kids walking and biking to school is good for kid’s health, schools, communities, and learning. The MDH Safe Routes to School program can connect you to resources and technical assistance for your school.

School Meals
Children consume 20 to 50 percent of their daily calories during the school day, giving school staff a unique opportunity to encourage healthy eating habits. Great Trays provides ideas, tools and resources to maximize the quality of school meals for Minnesota kids.

Tobacco
Tobacco Prevention & Control offers resources such as reports detailing the effects of tobacco use, educational materials, and guidance on community-based tobacco prevention programs.

TV/Screen Time
MDH is concerned about the effects of television and other screen time on the health of individuals, families and the community. Here you can get information and find out what you can do.
