The Minnesota PKU Foundation is excited to announce its upcoming event entitled Spring “Phe”ver – A day of education on PKU topics. This free event will include discussions on topics such as bone health in PKU, low protein cooking, mental health in PKU, patient stories and much more. Parents are welcome to bring their children (ages 5-12 years with PKU) as there will be a children’s program offered by the Child Family Life Specialists from Discovery/Explorer Clinics.

Location: Continuing Education and Conference Center, University of Minnesota, St. Paul Campus
Date: Saturday April 6, 2013
Time: 8 am – 3 pm (registration and breakfast from 8 am – 9 am, lunch will be provided)

An RSVP is requested by Monday, March 25, 2013. Please send an email to jbock1@fairview.org or call 612-273-6867 and indicate the number of children that will be attending the children’s program and also the number of non-PKU and PKU lunches required for your family/group.

Spring "Phe"ver day of education

Parents or guardians of a child (birth to 18 years) diagnosed with a genetic condition are invited to participate in a free training on care coordination offered by the Region 4 Genetics Collaborative. This training will provide parents with the skills, knowledge and resources they need to coordinate care for children with complex needs.

The MDH Newborn Screening Program Advisory Committee will meet by teleconference and WebEx from 1:00 – 4:00 P.M. on October 4, 2011. This meeting is open to the public. PACER Center is offering a free workshop for parents on Section 504 and children with disabilities or health care needs. Many children identified by newborn screening are eligible for services under this law. The program will be presented from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. in Bloomginton.

May 20-22, 2011

A weekend retreat for moms of children who are deaf or Hard of Hearing is planned for May 20-22. Mothers of children from newborn on up are invited to a weekend of relaxation, discussion, great food, and fun activities at Confidence Learning Center just north of Brainerd. Parents of children with newly recognized hearing loss are invited to meet with experts from the University of Minnesota on April 12th to discuss next steps in the process. Parents can participate in person or over the internet.

March 6 & 7, 2011

Plan to join more than 250 families and professionals interested in early hearing detection and intervention from across Minnesota and bordering states at the 2011 Minnesota Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Summit on Sunday, March 6 and Monday, March 7, 2011.

Minnesota has made great strides in building strong connections for families of children who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Summit will provide an opportunity to share best practices in newborn hearing screening, identification, and intervention services available to infants/young children identified with hearing loss and identify areas for improvement.

The Minnesota PKU Foundation supports research to find new treatments for Phenylketonuria, an inherited condition that leaves the body unable to process phenylalanine an essential amino acid. The buildup of phenylalanine can cause severe developmental problems. MN PKU Foundation also provides medical support to people who were not diagnosed in time to prevent long term problems.

“Puttin' for PKU” is an 18-hole scramble tournament Thursday, September 16th at the Ridges at Sand Creek golf course in Jordan. The $130 cost includes golf, cart, box lunch, and prime rib dinner. Diners-only pay $45.

The 21st meeting of the Secretary’s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC) will take place on May 13, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and May 14, 2010, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public with attendance limited to space availability and will be held at the Renaissance Washington, DC Dupont Circle Hotel, 1143 New Hampshire Avenue, N.W., Washington, DC 20037.

The meeting will be web cast. Information on how to access the webcast will be available one week prior to the meeting, May 6, 2010.

The meeting will include: (1) a presentation of the External Review Workgroup’s final report on the nomination of Hemoglobin H disease to the Advisory Committee’s recommended uniform screening panel; (2) presentations related to the system, information, and technology needs of newborn screening programs; (3) an update on the report being developed by the Sickle Cell Disease Carrier Screening workgroup; and (4) presentations on the continued work and reports of the Advisory Committee’s subcommittees on laboratory standards and procedures, follow-up and treatment, and education and training. Proposed Agenda items are subject to change as priorities dictate.
