Study Finds Adding Price Data to CPOE Systems Helps Reduce Tests and Costs
A new study in JAMA Internal Medicine, “Impact of Providing Fee Data on Laboratory Test Ordering: A Controlled Clinical Trial,” found that after physicians were given access to cost data through their computerized provider order entry systems, the number of tests ordered declined by 8.6% and the cost per patient-day fell by 9.6%.

Minnesota note: In 2012, 77% of Minnesota clinics with EHRs were effectively using CPOE, meaning that 80% or more of provider orders were electronic.
