National
National Survey on Health Information Exchange in Clinical Laboratories
ONC is conducting the National Survey on Health Information Exchange in Clinical Laboratories to provide policymakers with a comprehensive understanding of electronic laboratory information exchange capacity and activity among clinical laboratories across the nation. The survey includes information on laboratory information exchange, including the volume of test results sent electronically, adoption of standards, current information systems used, and barriers and facilitators for exchange. ONC will use these survey findings to monitor progress regarding electronic laboratory exchange and to inform policies that promote the exchange of structured test results among laboratories and ordering providers. ONC and their partner NORC, is administering the survey through May to a random sample of approximately 12,000 hospital and independent laboratories.
For more information or to find out if your laboratory has been selected to participate, please email labsurvey@norc.org or call 1-800-975-2754. Survey results will be published this summer to www.healthIT.gov. Please encourage your laboratory partners to participate!
*Minnesota Note:In 2010, the Minnesota Department of Health’s Office of Health Information Technology conducted a statewide survey of 137 clinical labs on the status, gaps and barriers for standards-based electronic orders and results. At that time, 97% of the labs had a laboratory information system (LIS) but most labs were not using LOINC or SNOMED.
To address this gap, The Minnesota Department of Health and the Minnesota e-Health Initiative in conjunction with the Laboratory Interoperability Cooperative (LIC) are pleased to offer Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR) Laboratory LOINC® Mapping Guidance educational resources to hospitals in Minnesota, including a free workshop on June 14th. To participate in the workshop and access the LIC online education resources, each facility must complete a Hospital Participation Letter as part of the registration process.
When: June 14, 2013, 9:00a.m. – 4:00p.m.
Where: Bloomington, MN
Register today for the free training. Space is limited to 4 participants per hospital (participation letter covers all hospital participants).
Reminder: Free Webinar: “Using an Electronic Health Record for Health Information Exchange and Interoperability for Safety Net Providers”
Join the Health Resources and Services Administration for a free Webinar on how safety net providers can electronically exchange health information and achieve interoperability using electronic health records (EHRs). Exchanging electronic health information with other providers is a requirement under Stage 2 of Meaningful Use and has been shown to reduce costs and duplication of services, increase patient engagement, enhance patient safety, and improve healthcare quality.
