Canada Achieves Major Cost Savings Through EHR Adoption
A study commissioned by Canada Health Infoway, “The Emerging Benefits of Electronic Medical Record Use in Community-Based Care,” found that the increased adoption of electronic health record systems helped Canada's health care system save an estimated 1.3 billion Canadian dollars, or about $1.27 billion, over six years. The study notes that Canada's health system achieved the savings through greater administrative efficiency and improved care. It also noted that EHR adoption contributed to better preventive services and chronic disease management, and improved communication among health care providers, as well as between physicians and patients.
