2. Fourth Annual Art of Recovery, April 20, 2007

In commemoration of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, the Office of Justice Programs and the Minnesota State Arts Board present the fourth annual Art of Recovery. Events associated with the show include the opening on April 20th, participation in the St. Paul Arts Crawl April 20-22, and a reading of literary works on Friday April 27. All activities will take place at the Minnesota State Arts Board.

3. Webinar: Facilitation training for peer educators: How to answer the tough questions students have about sexual assault, April 27, 2007

The National Center for Higher Education Risk Management (NCHERM) is a leader in providing webinars that are relevant, timely and full of useful practice tips.  Peer education is a powerful tool for prevention and risk reduction.  Peer education is most effective when the training provided to peer educators is of high quality.  Two of the toughest skills for peer educators to master are the art of facilitating dialogue, and how to answer student questions creatively and accurately.  Nowhere is this more important than in peer-to-peer discussion of sexual assault.  This webinar will provide two hours of training addressing sexual assault on college campuses.  The facilitators have faced the toughest questions students have, and have learned what answers provide the best educational impact.  There are expert at creating connections with audiences, and opening men and women to dialogue on sensitive issues.  Some of the student questions this webinar will address are:

*Is sexual assault an issue that I should be interested in?     *Why are men defensive about discussions of sexual assault?     *How do you address men's fear of false accusations?     *How do you address women's adherence to rape myths?     *Isn't date rape really just a regretted sex?     *How drunk is too drunk to consent?     *What if both parties to a sexual act are drunk?  Who has responsibility?     *What does it mean if someone invites me to their room?     *Does how someone is dressed send messages about their sexual intentions?     *Is foreplay a good thing or a bad thing?     *Isn't it artificial to have to talk about sex with your partner?     *Can men be victims?     *Isn't seducing someone a good thing?     *Does someone who is the object of sexual attention have an obligation to resist advances that they don't want?     *If someone has limits, isn't it their job to tell you what those are?     *How can a college student be a sexual predator?
 
Join us for this event and get an update on these crucial issues and more.  Pose your own questions to the presenters throughout the event.  A PowerPoint presentation prepared by the presenters will be provided to all registrants.
 
How a Webinar works: Webinars are cost-effective because everything you need is already in your office - a telephone and a computer.  Webinars are large-group conference calls where you can follow along online with our PowerPoint.  You can even project the PowerPoint via an LCD projector for group participation by your staff.  Each registrant can call in from one telephone line on campus, so you might arrange to use a phone in a conference room, where your staff and administrators can listen and participate via speakerphone.  You can also purchase additional lines for multiple campus call-in locations for a moderate surcharge.  You will receive a call-in 800 number and a PIN for the day of the event.  Once you join the call, you will be able to hear the presenters and ask questions via phone, while viewing the Power Point online.

4. Web Conference: Organizational Practices and Violence Against Women: Implications for Prevention, May 3, 2007

5. New Prevention Article: Sexual Violence Prevention

This excellent 'primer' article highlights the foundations of effective sexual violence prevention that draw from both the feminist movement and from research based approaches in field such as public health. 6. New Group in St. Paul for teen girls: "Safe Talk"

A new group called "Safe Talk" will be starting up soon for teen girls who have been sexually abused/assaulted and who are in therapy and want to move forward on their path.  The issues of rebuilding boundaries, deep emotions, coping skills and self-esteem will be addressed. 
 
Another group, the "Let's Talk" group, is an open group for girls who have been sexually abused/assaulted but are not yet in therapy and need time to take that next step.  "Let's Talk" focuses on building trusting relationships with the facilitator and the other group members, using art as a way of expression, and learning they are not alone in their experience.

8. Campaign carries important message to Latina Adolescents

Gracias Papa is a sexual-violence-prevention campaign in Virginia designed to help Latina adolescents (ages 11-17) avoid coercive, exploitive, and unhealthy relationships with older men. The campaign, which consists of three radio spots and a fotonovela (comicbook-style brochure) featuring Latino fathers with daughters, was developed by the Virginia Department of Health as an expansion of the Isn't She a Little Young: Sex with a Minor, Don't Go There campaign initiated in 2004. The radio spots are available at http://www.paramihija.com, a Spanish-language Web page that also includes a discussion of why statutory rape and sexual coercion of minors by adults is a problem, warning signs of abusive relationships (borrowed from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Choose Respect initiative), and national links. The fotonovela, which features a discussion between a Latino father and his 14-year-old daughter, is available at http://www.vdh.state.va.us/news/pdf/Fotonovela.pdf.

9. Girls with Early Puberty, Older Boyfriends at Greater Risk for Drugs, Sex, Alcohol

Teenaged girls who mature physically sooner than their peers and who also have a romantic partner at least two years older have a higher risk for substance abuse, sex and a combination of sex and drug use, according to a University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) study. 10. Movie: Respect Me, Don't Media Me

RESPECT ME, DON'T MEDIA ME was produced in a workshop with Sisters Empowering Sisters, a program of Girl's Best Friend. The movie examines the portrayal of young women in music videos and other media. It also asks the questions: what does this kind of portrayal mean for young women? 11. Ms. Foundation for Women Safety Grants

The Ms. Foundation for Women announces a call for proposals in the area of gender violence prevention. The Ms. Foundation is seeking proposals from grassroots groups with an organizing approach to gender violence prevention. Areas of particular interest include community-driven strategies that challenge gender violence on a systemic level, child sexual abuse/incest prevention, and prevention strategies that transform gender roles. Organizations seeking grant awards must utilize community-centered strategies driven by a race, class, gender analysis. Proposals must be received by May 24, 2007 (no emails or faxes will be accepted). After this date, please do not use these guidelines, as they may not be applicable to future grant cycles.
